Merdhyn Winstrom – A reclusive Cornish engineer and tinkerer, possibly the last man standing on Earth. Living in solitude on a small islet near Lazurne, Ukraine, he survives alongside his pet rodent, Tuppence. He discovered the wreckage of a crashed shuttle from Helix 57, that should have carried refugees to safety. Despite its fractured state, Merdhyn is convinced he can repair if not the whole shuttle, at least its transponder and send a signal, hoping to make contact with whatever—or whoever—might still be out there.
